Chapter 158: Ready Again

Chapter Cast (at the end of the chapter)

I slept only as much as I needed to in the night, up well before dawn but feeling surprisingly rested. I got coffee and a breakfast stew going, then relieved myself and went to check on the night watch.

Ekoh was awake, Kilba sleeping on the built-in bunk. The older man nodded to me, then stood up from the outpost and led me off aways. "Interesting omen," he told me, looking out towards the water.

"What?"

"Don't you hear them?"

I listened a moment. The breeze was still and the surf rather calm. Over the low whoosh of the waves, I could hear popping and the sounds of something agitating the water further off shore.

"What is that?"

Ekoh replied quietly, "Sharks, most likely."

"Shark? Feeding?"

"Probably. Followed something in close to shore, say, ten minutes ago. They've moved out a bit since then."

I reached back in my memories but could recall nothing similar that I'd seen or heard. We'd caught a shark or two while fishing from time to time, but that was it. "Why's that an omen?"

Ekoh shrugged, "Experience, really. I've seen a few times where sharks come in like this. Whatever you're trying to catch won't be there for a few days. Not always, but often enough."

"We've caught sharks before, never much seemed to affect our success," I replied.

He shrugged again, "Like I said, not always, but that's a lot of sharks, Kal. The volume alone suggests a dozen or more. And that's just the ones in close right here. They could be up and down this beach. Just wanted you to know. Might be something, might be nothing."

"Appreciated. Popko and Hunamu are on fish duties today, and Takino if we can spare him. I'll let them know what you saw and, if they find nothing taking the bait, we'll ensure they switch over to crabs and shellfish exclusively for a day or two. Won't hurt us," I grinned, "to have some extra of those around right now."

"Indeed," Ekoh agreed. "Any chance there's a nice fat cow or two out there somewhere? Sure could go for a steak right about now."

I laughed. "Afraid not. Never was much of a beef eater, myself, usually preferred chicken or seafood."

"What? I thought all you Americans were required to love beef."

Grinning, I replied, "Just never saw the big deal. I'd eat a steak sometimes, or a burger, but really, give me a chicken sandwich or some stir fry with chicken, I was much happier."

"What about bacon?"

"Oh, I love bacon."

"Thank God," Ekoh laughed, "I was rather worried about you for a moment. We can certainly agree we'd like Popko and Hunamu to pull in a rasher or two?"

I nodded, smiling, "That would be good. Hakee makes it here, on occasion, from the wild piglets we catch. Not quite like the bacon I grew up on, but it's tasty. We should be catching a few of them again soon now that the mating season is over and the Summer months are when they start to grow enough to make a meal out of."

"Mmm, can't wait. Maybe if I can get out on a trading run, I'll look for such things."

"Wish that was an easy thing, Ekoh. I really do."

"I know. It's risky. We've already risked a lot just to get me, and the others, here on Phoenix. I am ever grateful, Kal. I mean that. This place is so much more than I expected. I do wish to travel and trade again one day, but only when it makes sense."

I nodded, then said, "I'm worried about Uhonamona. We haven't been able to contact them in some time."

"Yes, I know," he replied. "It's Progress United, I expect."

"What do you mean?"

"I suppose they have now allied and Progress has insisted on them cutting you off here. I don't think it is malicious, but they don't wish to risk passing anything over the airwaves which might put any planning at risk."

"Makes sense. Still, I don't like the silence. Even a quick message acknowledging they're fine would be something I could live with. We're isolated here, and we're quite used to that, but we had begun to count on Uhonamona for information. I don't like being cutoff..."

- - -

Ekoh's expectations for the fishing turned out to be correct, and Popko and Hunamu stashed the polls and went to work with line and hands. We'd been having to move further and further to the West to find shellfish as we slowly picked them clean closer to the camp. The current spot was several hundred yards down that way and though it wasn't high on the list of concerns, it did make me wonder if we might have a problem with overfishing near the South camp.

It was something we knew might happen, but we'd always expected we could just move out of the area until it was replenished. The current situation was going to put that to a test. Tok directed our fishing schedule while he was South and wanted us to leave the area around the camp unpicked for at least a month, though we would still spot check it to get a better idea of how fast it might come back to normal.

This was the effect of so many people being on the island now. We had a lot more mouths to feed, and a lot more hands to help gather the sustenance needed. The shallows around the camp had been seeing declines in shellfish for some months, but movements of just a few tens of yards usually found them again. Now, it was obvious, quickly, that we had to better track our shellfish utilization.

We'd been collecting counts for many months. Gale had taken that up early on, just for curiosity's sake, but it became valuable when she started needing to carefully plan our food resources months out. Amy handled the counting in the South with Gale in the North, unless Bailey was taking care of it that day. Glancing at the notebook where the marks were registered, I saw a decided uptick in the numbers of clams, scallops, and other mollusks we'd been collecting since the newcomers had arrived. It was only a few days, a small sample size, and sure, many of them were in the North or had been for much of the stay, but we it looked like the impact of the newcomers was more than just social.

- - -

"Can we have a word?" Felicity asked me as I cooled off in the shade with Amy, Bailey, and the little ones, Keekah napping in the heat of the day.

"Any time."

She looked at me quietly and I realized she meant a private word.

I stood and walked with her to the East.

"What's on your mind?"

"I don't appreciate you sending that woman to me."

"Huh?"

"Kinnon," she replied, "I'm not going to be pitied, Kal. I thought I was clear about that."

"I... I only thought—"

"Her problems are her own, not mine. I have no wish to discuss my life with her."

I remained calm and remembered to be gentle and understanding. "Alright... I'll let her know..."

Felicity stopped and I waited for her to respond. "It's not like we have anything in common. Her abuse and mine... they are nothing alike."

"I know."

"No," Felicity hissed, "you do not."

I didn't reply.

The woman seemed to chew her words a moment, then I realized she was trying not to cry. "I hate being like this," she said quietly. "I hate being broken..."

My heart sank for her. I wished there was something I could do or say to make things better. I knew that only time, patience, and gentle kindness could help, and it left me saying, "I don't understand. You're right. I don't. Honestly, I hope I never understand in the way you do."

She nodded once, wiping an eye with the back of her hand. "I'm sorry... I'm being difficult... and mean..."

"Difficult and mean is how you survived long enough to get to us, I think."

"True..."

"Tell me something," I said.

"What?"

"Back... before all this... what did you do for fun? Besides teach, I mean."

Felicity looked off to the West for a long time before she replied. "I read a lot. Not a surprise, I'm sure, since I was a teacher. I liked silly romantic movies. I sometimes played racquetball or football... err.. soccer. Kiwis call it football."

"We're still working on the movie theater, I think Gale has plans for that somewhere," I said. It brought just a hint of a smile to Felicity's face. "We have a decent amount of books, all things considered. The library's in the common shelter, feel free any time."

"I saw... thanks."

"We do have a soccer ball, too. Maybe we can break that out at some point, though it's been awfully hot to run around when not working..."

"Yeah... good to know."

"Do you play chess?" I asked.

"I used to, yeah."

"We have a chess set," I told her, not mentioning that we'd pulled it off the Humble Beginnings, "maybe you'd like to play a match with me tonight... or with Kate, maybe? She was always much better than I was."

Felicity nodded but was quiet a moment, shuffling her feet. Then she said quietly, "She's a good woman, Kal. I... I really appreciate her company..."

"I'm glad. I love Kate. Like I said before, she's as good a friend as I've ever had."

She nodded again, then said, "Please don't take what I said before as... as badly as it sounded. I appreciate that you want to help me, Kal. I know you all do. I'm just... I'm not used to needing help. I hate it, in fact. It makes me feel so... angry. I should be able to deal with this on my own."

I was beginning to learn when to not respond and let Felicity finish her thought.

She added, "It's so many new people right now. I'm raw. I'm vulnerable. And new people... they're just... threats... maybe not like that asshole, but... I don't feel comfortable with new people... Maybe, when I'm in a better mindset, maybe I'll talk with Kinnon..."

"Only if that's what you want."

"I would rather talk to her as women, not as broken things," Felicity said, her tone somewhere between a whimper and a growl, "but life has not worked out that way, I suppose." She turned toward me and I could see the redness in her eyes though the tears had stopped sliding down her cheeks. "Thanks... I... I know I snap... I can't control that... Please know... I am thankful. I'm working on myself, Kal. This is really hard."

I nodded but remained silent.

"Think I'll head back to Kate now, I... I appreciate your ear, Kal."

"Any time."

- - -

Dealing with Felicity was a complication in my life, but I recognized how small a thing that was compared to what she was dealing with. Small, even, compared to the everyday concerns I faced when it came to ensuring the safety and welfare of my community.

Azure had developed a cough. Kinnon checked her out but said there were no other warning signs. Amy was worried, naturally, and I did my best to calm her in the afternoon.

Kinnon herself was having ups and downs, still worrying about what might happen with Nina and Hakee, scared that her fast love affair with the former would be lost, concerned that the two might break up over Kinnon's arrival.

Bailey started feeling run down that day. I hoped it was just the heat of Summer, but I knew better than to take anything for granted. We were caught up on all the priorities and even ahead on things like the gardens around the South camp, so I ensured she take it easy and rest and stay hydrated. I kept an eye on Katie most of the afternoon while I worked on repairing a crack in one of the shelter roofs. It was tricky, to say the least, to watch a toddling little one in the sand while I was several feet off the ground. My knees were killing me after so many trips up and down the ladder.

Heavy rain came in early that evening and washed away any outside plans we might have had, chasing us into shelters. It was just as well. The fishing had been aborted early, and the shellfish and crab catches were modest, at best. That was one more problem weighing on my mind that evening.

At least the rain brought cool breezes with it. The temperature dropped significantly after the front came through, slowly cooling the interiors of the shelters. I was happy to see Kate and Felicity sitting together inside the common room while dinner cooked, both reading. Kate flashed me a smile, but Felicity showed no sign of my, or anyone else's, presence.

I checked in with the North camp and talked to Gale a bit about the shellfish issue. She said she would revise down her expectations for yield there in the short term so that we could let the beds recover. I let her know it wasn't really an issue yet, that we had plenty of beach in the South to use for harvest, but she insisted we not take any chances.

I talked to Kinnon and Kate about my interaction with Felicity. Kate apologized, saying she didn't think Felicity would react so negatively, and Kinnon was surprised given that her one significant conversation with the woman had been gentle and positive. Regardless, we all agreed we would let Felicity decide when and if she wished to approach Kinnon in the future. It was frustrating for all of us, but again, our frustrations were nothing compared to what Felicity was going through.

Felicity and I played a chess match and she beat me easily, then she split two matches with Kate. At least for an hour or two, the woman seemed to enjoy herself. I knew how important it would be to find ways to help Felicity without appearing to do so.

- - -

The next couple of days continued to be rainy. It was steady but mostly light, and outside work could be undertaken. Fishing continued to return poor results, and the crabbing, too, was not great. We didn't see the sharks again, but it was hard not to wonder if Ekoh's thoughts were based on some effect we couldn't see from above the water. Whatever was going on, it meant little fresh meat for our stews and we needed to take more than usual from our stores.

Thankfully, we did have plenty and could weather such issues, so long as they remained moderate. The fish would return, I was sure, so I didn't worry about it too much.

Importantly, Ekoh was finally able to open the Humble Beginnings safe which had for days refused to reveal its contents. As we suspected, most of what was in there was valuable for trade. Gold and platinum in bars and coins, assorted jewelry, gemstones. More bundles of a variety of currencies. I wasn't sure how much the latter was worth in the current state of the world. There were six keys on a ring, but we didn't have the locks to fit them. Eleven deeds to properties, two letters of credit drawn up over a year before the War started, and a disgusting number of credit cards. I wasn't sure exactly when the man had started his cruising, but from the look of things, he'd been at it for a while.

There were two single-action revolvers, probably last used a century earlier, both ill-maintained and rusty, along with a handful of bullets which were likely just as old.

The gold and other valuables were good to have gotten from the safe and would surely be useful when we were able to barter in the future, but the one thing we never expected to find was a purse.

It was large, black and dark-red, two long, looping handles attached. When Ekoh brought it to me around noon on December 28th, he said he hadn't opened it. "It would not be right," he told me, adding that it made him feel strange to just think about opening a woman's purse.

I took it and he returned to stacking the items he'd fetched out of the safe.

I looked it over. I started to unzip it, then paused. Could this belong to one of the women who had come from Humble Beginnings? I carried it to where Abuella and Ranice were stacking newly-cut wood to age. They shook their heads when I asked if it belonged to either of them.

Looking for Felicity, I found her with Kate where they were working on planting hot peppers and herbs in one of the new South gardens. "Hate to interrupt," I said, "is this yours, Felicity? We found it in the safe..."

She turned and stared at me, not really seeing what I held at first. Then her eyes drifted to the purse, and I saw her lip tremble. "It's... mine... I thought that was gone forever..."

I handed it to her after she wiped her hands on her soil-covered slacks. She held it in front of her a moment, clearly battling her emotions. I wondered how difficult that moment was for her. I expected the purse had not been seen since she'd been kidnapped, a relic of a former life that no longer existed. What was held inside had been important to Felicity before her days on the Humble Beginnings. Would the contents only make things worse by bringing back simpler, kinder memories?

"Thanks," she said, blinking a couple of times then setting the purse aside.

Kate looked at me quickly and I nodded to her before leaving. It wasn't my place to pry or ask about the purse's meaning for Felicity. The women returned to their work, and I left to pick back up the grueling task of chopping wood.

- - -

The evening supper was cooked for the third straight day inside the common room. I had three of the four little ones with me, Harry and Hermione mostly napping on a blanket to my right, Katie crawling over me and giggling every time she touched my beard. I have no idea why she found it so funny that I had hair on my face, but she laughed with delight each time her fingers touched my new growth.

I'd been shaving it for a couple of weeks, but lately had let it start to grow back in, the process of clearing away each day's stubble too much trouble to maintain long. I'd always hated shaving, though I admit that I had generally found women more attracted to me if my face wasn't covered in hair. Given that I wasn't exactly in need of new girlfriends or potential partners, the incentive was not there to continue trimming away the stubble. I'd only really shaved a month or so earlier because of Kinnon's comments, and it was rather a relief to not continue that effort. She didn't care, or at least she didn't mention it again, and our one night together had been quickly overshadowed by her relationship with Nina. Even if it hadn't, the time consuming process took away spare minutes for other things, like hanging out with my daughters and son.

"Tikklah," Katie babbled, smiling and touching my face. "Tikklah."

It was a rather large word for her to attempt, and she repeated it several times as I slowly eased her towards 'tickle.' She laughed when I held her in the air, upside down, and blew kisses against her little stomach.

Harry and Hermione just watched me with sleepy eyes. They'd been very docile the past few days, little fussing and no trouble for whomever was watching them. I held Katie over where they rested on their backs, watching their half-sister as the girl giggled down at them. "Harry," I said to Katie, "Harry."

"Arrugh."

"Harry."

"Arrugh."

"Hermione."

Katie laughed like she usually did at the little girl's name, then said, "Umino."

"Hermione," I repeated.

"Umino."

I hugged Katie to me and she cooed, then grew restless and wanted down. She crawled around the common shelter while I checked on the stew.

Inside were most of the others in the South. Felicity was talking with Takino and with a book in hand, she seemed to be giving him a lesson in reading. I watched a moment, the woman feeling my gaze and looking back at me. I offered a gentle smile, and was warmed to see one sent my way in return. Small steps were important, I knew.

Keekah and Bailey were bathing, Amy as well, most of the others working at tasks such as putting up new shelves and cabinets for storage or mending clothing, bedding, and nets. Tok was occupied with his new concoction, making a wine, of sorts, with fermented tubers and the wonderful vanilla beans which had been ripening aplenty over the weeks. The tuber crops had been especially plentiful over the past year, and we'd found a wide variety of uses, from throwing them in stews to frying them like potatoes, even making flour which could be used to thicken soups or for unleavened bread. Tok expected the new vanilla wine might be a bit odd, but he thought the tubers might create something like a vodka, though a very different process was being used. The vanilla would help cover the odd bitter aftertaste he'd noted in the first small test batch from weeks earlier.

Kate came in from outside, drenched, and quickly dried herself with a towel from the pile kept near the main door. She settled herself next to me, tickling Harry and Hermione and delighting in the way they smiled at her. "So," she said very quietly, "that purse was a bit of a godsend, Kal."

"Oh?" I whispered, careful to keep my voice low.

"She opened it up once we went inside to take a break earlier. She cried for a while, but then started to pull out what was in there."

"And?"

Kate shrugged, "Mostly, what you'd expect. Makeup. Tissues. Keys. That sort of thing. Her old wallet with identity card, insurance, those kinds of items. A small vibrator," Kate added. "I thought that one might set her off crying again, you know, after what's happened... I don't think sex is going to be on her mind for a long time, but... she actually seemed relieved to see, what she called, 'her old friend.'"

I nodded, "I suppose being reminded that the world didn't start when she was kidnapped might be a good thing."

"I think so. Little by little, Kal. I wish there was a quick fix for her, but it won't be like that."

"I know. Thank you for being there for her. I know she really needs someone close right now."

"She does," Kate agreed, "and she's been talking more and more with me. More horrible details... but also some good ones, from her life before. Felicity seems really eager to teach again, that's why Amy and Bailey had her start working with Takino, to teach him to read. I think it will be good for her to remember how much she enjoyed helping other people. It might actually go a great ways towards helping her, as well."

"I hope so. Anything I can do?"

Kate shook her head, "No, thanks. Baby steps."

She kissed me, then said, "Before I eat, I'm going to check on her and then I think I might draw up a bath."

I watched her go, Kate's gorgeous ass jiggling as she walked back to sit beside Felicity. No matter what the world had done to us, where we lived, how we survived, Kate always managed to catch my attention, sexual or otherwise. I loved her more than ever before, and I found it to be quite a heartening realization.

Keekah and Bailey came in, clean and smiling. "Hey there, stud," Bailey grinned at me, "got a nice surprise for you, if you're interested..."

"Do tell," I smiled.

"Well... seeing as how it's going to be a bit before the stew is ready, and seeing as how a certain wife of yours has been so horny lately and unable to do anything about it before now... I thought maybe I'd watch the little ones and maybe someone else could keep an eye on supper while you and Keekah go enjoy yourselves..."

"Oh, that does sound lovely," I purred, grinning at the two lovely teens.

"I so horny, Kowl," Keekah told me, her dark nipples hard, her fur patch still glistening from her bath, "and I ready again... Kinnon say so..."

"I've been hoping to hear those words..."

"Go on, you two," Bailey told us, "I've got these rascals."

I stood and took Keekah's hand and led her into our shelter. I noticed Felicity's eyes watching us leave and I worried about how she might react if she heard anything sexual. I hoped we didn't trigger anything in her while we enjoyed ourselves.

"Mmm," I moaned, kissing Keekah inside our shelter, letting my hands drift down to fondle her motherly, milk-filled breasts, "God, I've missed your touch..."

"Me also," she replied, her fingers grasping my buttocks. Her belly was already a third its size from her pregnancy, the teen more active in the past couple of weeks, her lean muscle and strong limbs beginning to show through again. Keekah had certainly aged since I'd first met her, no longer the rounded, fresh-faced young teenager, now a young mother, features more defined and even more attractive. She still held a little baby weight, but that just added to my arousal as I slid us onto the mattress and sucked on her heavy breasts.

Keekah's milk squirted into my mouth as I squeezed and suckled. I didn't take too much, careful to leave plenty for the infants, but I loved the warm, slightly-sweet milk which came from my lover's body. She moaned as I let my hand stray down between her thighs, her wetness already coating her labia and making her vagina slippery. Her flesh there was still stretched somewhat from childbirth, but her clit was erect and clearly in need of attention, so I began to slowly circle it with two fingers.

"No waiting now, Kowl," Keekah told me, her breathing already quick, "I want you inside..."

"Never much needed to be warmed up, did you?" I laughed.

"Never. Mmm... Please, Kowl... I wait so long!"

I rose over her as Keekah parted her thighs, her dark vulva spread open, wet, gaping a bit more than it used to, her folds somewhat less defined by subtle curves of youth and now mature and showing signs of her motherhood. God, was she sexy!

Keekah grabbed my cock as we kissed, my erection hovering just above her vagina. She pulled me forward and I felt the teen's wet heat surround me fully. She moaned into my mouth, her hard clit soon grinding against my Mons Pubis, her body moving as I held still inside her. Keekah rutted against me on her own, fingers dancing over her clit, and then a hand slid around behind me and grabbed my buttock, urging me deeper.

We mated urgently, our kiss breaking only to inhale a lungful of air before continuing. Keekah had always been an easy lover, a girl who enjoyed being fucked, and giving back whatever she was given. Her body was no longer that of a little teen, but still held softness of her youth. Her pussy was stretched from childbirth but still clamped down on me when she orgasmed, and did so again just minutes later.

By the time Keekah's body shuddered into a third, I was on the edge of my own. "Fill me up, Kowl... Fill me up... Just like when you gave me babies... Mmmm..."

I spurted hard inside Keekah's vagina, my cum pooling against her cervix, soon squishing as I thrust in several times and groaned into her mouth. Her legs rose up and wrapped around my hips, crossing over my waist, her arms around my shoulders. I slid my head down to nuzzle her neck, slowly caressing her left breast with one hand, the other barely holding my weight off her body. Keekah's milk was leaking freely down her side, more coating my fingers.

"Mmmm, Kowl... Mmm... I miss this... I miss so much..."

"Not any more," I promised the young mother, smiling and feeling wonderful, "I missed this, too... So glad you and I are together again..."

"Mmm... Yes... Now," she said with a grin, "you give me more babies."

I chuckled, "We'll see," I replied, my cock twitching and threatening to rise at the thought of impregnating Keekah again, "don't you think two is enough? I don't know how you handle the ones we have already..."

"I handle fine," she assured me, "I want a whole lot of babies... As many as I can..."

"Well... that's your decision... I expect you won't be getting an IUD, then?"

Keekah shook her head, "No."

"Then... whatever happens, happens. Probably won't get pregnant soon with you still nursing the little ones..."

"I try a lot, then," she grinned. "Maybe Tok want give me babies, too. Or another."

"I suspect you'll have no trouble finding willing donors, myself included."

I rolled off her and cradled her against my shoulder. "Anyone in particular caught your eye? Any of the new folks?"

Keekah thought a moment, then said, "Any of them... Kowl, you know me. I like all."

I laughed, "That is true."

"Maybe Sebastian..."

I gently replied, "He's... simple, Keekah... I'm... I'm not sure about him understanding sex..."

"I know. I talk with him. He know some. I teach him if he want."

"Just... be careful. He's had a tough past. He might not fully understand how things work here."

"I know," Keekah repeated. "I be careful with him, Kowl. And also, I curious to see Ekoh penis."

"He may not exactly want to show you... Remember that part of his agreement?"

"I no make fun, Kowl. That not me," she huffed. "I do not care if small. I think it be fun anyway. And he will like, I know this."

"Well... you're free to do what you will, of course, Keekah."

"Sweet Kowl," she smiled up at me, "you good lover and give me babies and no care if I know other lovers. Lucky Keekah."

"Lucky Kal," I replied, "and lucky anyone else who gets to spend intimate moments with you."

"Mmm... Okay, I ready again. I want you inside."

I laughed, "I might need a minute or two... or some help..."

She purred, her hand already stroking my cock to life, "My mouth work again, too..." she laughed and within seconds, Keekah had rolled me onto my back and slid my penis into her between her lips.

Lucky Kal, indeed!
